Workshop 1: Drawing

The first one will be intensive drawing for two full days. There will be one 3hr session with a model on day 2. This workshop will be suitable for those with all levels of experience. This is an opportunity to work on the perceptual skills and techniques of drawing a variety of subejcts from objects, to botanical and the figure and appreciating  how drawing teaches us observational skills that underpin all of the arts and sciences – not only the visual arts.

Cost of the workshop  is $130  for two days including models fees.

Workshop 2: Applied Drawing Weekend

Drawing is often left out in the process of painting and in this workshop we look at the problem solving aspects of drawing and its role in the overall process of painting and any of the visual arts including design and illustration.This will be an applied drawing workshop where preliminary drawings and studies will be developed and applied to a painting or illustration or design project.This may be a follow up from the first workshop or participants can work from a subject or references of their choice. This may be an idea that combines subjective, imaginative elements or realism. Participants will be shown how to do tonal and compositional studies and ways to transfer their drawings into colour technique onto paper, canvas.

Cost of the 2 day workshop is $120

Sketchbook Technique

On Friday’s over three weeks,  a morning of sketching out and about in the Leura and Katoomba area. Eack week we will visit a variety of inspiring locations to draw and sketch. If the weather is bad – suitable indoor locations will be arranged. Areas covered will be sketchbook drawing technique for a variety of subjects from botanical to architecture and figures.

Meet will be arranged each of the 3 weeks in the Katoomba, Leura area and pick up can be arrange from station for those without transport.

Bring a fold up chair a sketchbook and morning tea.

Friday’s 10 – 1pm  on  27th January, Feb 3rd and 10th

$40 per week or $100 for all 3

Trained in fine art and graphic design, Faye works across a range of traditional techniques and combines these with digital mediums in her current work.

She is best known for her gestural, calligraphic style that has won her many industry awards and  a wide range of clients from advertising and publishing, to fashion and merchandising design.

Faye is a passionate mentor with many years tertiary art  teaching experience at centres of excellence such as Enmore Design Centre on Sydney – where she taught drawing and illustration for over ten years and more recently at NMIT Bachelor of Illustration course at Fairfield, Melbourne.

Faye is currently working on her first graphic novel in which she combines traditional pen and ink wash drawings with a hand lettered narrative.

Each week the sessions will be held in different locations inside and outside, weather permitting.

The group will meet on Wednesday’s ( with a break for lunch) and you can join at any time.

If you would like to attend but are not available on Wednesday’s, please let me know as I may have the numbers for a second group/time.

The course will include close individual instruction and guided practice in the following areas:

• Figure sketching.
• Botanical sketching and studies.
• Perspective and foreshortening.
• Capturing movement.
• Art mediums and techniques for sketchbooks.

This course is perfect for those wanting to really work on their drawing skills and develop the practice of using a sketchbook to practice drawing, research, store ideas and make studies. Though some experience is advisable – beginners and those who have little confidence, but a desire to learn are most welcome.

Participants will need a sketchbook and some basic materials – a list will be provided on booking.

Katoomba turned on it’s best and worst during the week weather wise, but we were snug in our Steam Laundry Studio.

It was lovely to meet Mags, Denise, Lia and Yoshi and to catch up with Ruth, Lois, Reyna, Ken and Gordon.

Over the week we painted and drew from a variety of subjects from winter still life with fennel and carrots to pomegranates and lemons with iris’s.

Our costumed models were Felix and Lily who both extraordinarily fascinating to draw and paint. Felix’s long limbs and dark broody face resulted in some excellent sketches and portraits. Lily has that delicate but striking face that shows her Japanese, Polish heritage and was dresses in a way that accentuated her long elegant proportions. There were a number of wonderful painting and drawings of Lily done through the session and continued afterwards. Well done models and participants!

As usual I was amazed at how a bunch of people can all look at the same subjects and interpret it in so many equally interesting ways.Mags – who had done very little drawing or painting jumped in bravely and approached the week with an openness that really was refreshing to see. She also went away at the end of the week with some great work.
Overall I have to congratulate the group on staying so focused, for being so open and keen to learn while retaining the ability to have fun while doing it. You were all great.
